Dear all:

Are you aware of the news on Lhasa, Tibet? The protest in the capital began on March 10 and developed into violent rioting. Furthermore, it spread to neighboring regions. China says 19 people were killed during the riot; however, the Tibetan government-in-exile says about 140 people have been killed in the crackdown by the Chinese security force (BBC). At the height of the unrest, foreigners were forced to leave Tibet. At that time, Lhasa was believed to be sealed off. On March27, to show the world that order has been restored, China invited a group of reporters for a three-day escorted visit. Please refer to the BBC news for the details. After the reading, please answer the following two questions based on the report. Last but not lease, write down your thoughts on that.

1.      Whom does China accuse of masterminding the protest? What did the monks respond to that accusation?

2.  Why do the reporters describe the city, Lhasa, as a divided city?

    1. Whom does China accuse of masterminding the protest? What did the monks respond to that accusation?

Dalai Lama. Monks said it had nothing to do with the Dalai Lama

    2. Why do the reporters describe the city, Lhasa, as a divided city?

The reporters said Tibetan quarter is still sealed off with police on every corner while the life in new town is described as returning to semblance of normality.

    1. China has accused the Dalai Lama of masterminding the protests, but the monks said that Dalai Lama had nothing to do with that.

    2. The places where Chinese and Tibetan live in are different. One is fairly normal and the other is seems to be a damaged city.

and all the rioting had nothing to do with the Dalai Lama

2.What the reporter saw is a place with two totally different sence.
One seems normal, while the other still remains burnt-out buildings.

I think what Tibetan government-in-exile said is ture. And that the reason china lowered the reported casualties is that china wants to decrease the international care about the real Tibet issue. The harder China tries to keep the secret, the more the world want to know.

1.The China government has accused Dalai Lama is the one who masterminding the protests, but the monks in Tibet said the rioting has nothing to do with Dalai Lama.

2.The reporters said one part of Tibet has a heavy security, police and soldiers everywhere. In the contrast, the new town’s life is normal that the shops and restaurants are full of customers.

    1. Chinese government accused Dalai Lama of masterminding the protests, but one monk said the rioting “had nothing to do with the Dalai Lama”.

    2. Lhasa is a divided city because there is significant difference between Chinese section and Tibetan section. Chinese is going on normal lives, however, Tibetan is still escorted by the army. It is obvious unfair in Lhasa.

Lhasa is described as a divided city. The newer part of the city where more Han people inhabit has came back to normal life and everything seems quite as it was before, shops went back to business and all. While the old part of the city rich in Tibetan culture remains filled with the smell of burnt buildings even two weeks after the riot swept through.
The Chinese government accused Dali Lahma to be behind the riot. However during an escorted tour in the city, journalists worldwide witnessed a sudden outburst of monks shouting out the truth of the recent unrest. The monks claim that their spiritual leader has nothing to do with the riot and that Tibet isn’t free (from the Chinese oppression).
I feel more intact with the world after reading the reports and the videos of the issue. Before this, I only saw the news on newspaper and it didn’t seem like a big deal to me. I even felt indifferent to it, for I couldn’t put myself in their shoes through plain paper and words. After seeing the live reports and video of the riot, I realized what a huge impact and tragedy it is to the souls of Tibet and I felt ashamed to take it so lightly before. I hope there will be a negotiable new understanding between the Chinese and the Tibet.

    1. Dalai Lama. They said Tibet has no freedom and the rioting had nothing to do with Dalai Lama. Most importantly, they were not allow to leave the temple during the rioting.
    2. Because Lhasa was divided from Chinese section and Tibetan section. The former look peace and the latter is in chaos.

Whether Taiwan’s situation is like Tibet or not, I think the whole world should mourn for the people who sacrifice in the rioting.

    Everyone wants peace.

Viewing this incident, I feel that I’m just an outsider. The whole case seemed obscure while authority is trying to conceal the truth. Although Chinese government blamed Dalai Lama for the riot, monks in Tibet has denied the accusation against him. What to believe remains a question. Still, Tibet’s situation remains unsolved. Different sections show different conditions. While some part of it is in flame, other places just like normal. What’s without question is that the problem is not going to end in the near future.

Dalai Lama is accused of masterminding the protest. Therefore, the monks responded that accusation is false and point out Dalai has done nothing with the rioting.
In the Lhasa, there are two parts: Chinese lives and Tibetan lives. The former that has been fairly normal and the other is still in a mess.

    1. China accused Dalai Lama of masterminding the protests.
One monk cried out and said that they were not free; others said since the violence happened, they were not allowed to leave the temple.
    2. Conflict between China and Dalai Lama has become worse. But China doesn’t step in Dalai Lama’s shoes. Instead they send more soldiers and police in every corner.

The Chinese government accused Dalai Lama as the mastermind. But the monks said that Tibet is not free at all and the protest was nothing to do with Dalai Lama.
There are Chinese and Tibtan in Lhasa. After the protest, everything seem normal in Chinese area but solders in Tibtan area. There must be something unfair happening in Tibet.

    1. Whom does China accuse of masterminding the protest? What did the monks respond to that accusation?
Dalai Lama was accused of masterminding the protest by China; meantime, the US government hoped that China begin to talk with Dalai Lama.
Monks denied all accusation. One of the monk responded to journalists that Dalai Lama had nothing to do with the rioting and the other one shouted that Tibet is not free at all.
    2. Why do the reporters describe the city, Lhasa, as a divided city?
Lhasa was divided into two sections. Chinese part of Lhasa, anything looks normal and prosperous. On the contrary, Tibetan part of Lhasa looks destroyed. So, the journalist described that Lhasa was a divided city.

Dalai Lama has almost convicted to be a wire-puller of this chain of rioting. But according to the oral evidence of the monks, Dalai Lama didn’t involve the events.

    2. Why do the reporters describe the city, Lhasa, as a divided city?

It seems that there is two different worlds in Lhasa. The people in very Chinese part of the city still live their normal life.

But in the older side of the town could see the remains of burnt-out buildings all over.
