This 2003 issue of National Geographic celebrated the 50th anniversary of Edmund Hillary’s conquest of Everest. (National Geographic)
Dear all:
Any thoughts on Lesson 2 “Because It’s There: Climbing Mount Everest”? Thanks to the lesson, we then have the chance to get a closer look at mountaineering and to know a few tough guys willing to take the challenge testing their limits against a great obstacle. Among them are George Mallory, Andrew Irvin, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Eventually, Mallory’s body was found on May 2, 1999, seventy-five years after his missing near the summit of Mount Everest.(click for the photo) His son, however, requested his remains be left there as a fitting memorial to his father. Another hero, Edmund Hillary, died on Jan.11, 2008. People around the globe mourned his death not merely because he was the first to scale Mount Everest but because how hard he had tried to promote the welfare of the Nepalese people. There are a couple links here introducing the life of Sir Edmund Hillary. Pick one or two and find out more about this great man yourself, Academy of Achievement , Wikipedia or Sir Edmund Hillary Photo Gallery.

After seeing the picture of Mallory’s body I think that is a great thing a hero choose to do.He knew that climbing Mt. Everest was very dangerous but he still tried hard to do it and ended his life there. He set a good example for all the people who want to conquer the highest mountain in the world including ,Edmund Hillary, who was the first person to go to the top of mountain Everest and came back alive. The reason for first few people who acheved the goal without advanced equipment is because they love this place. So we should take good care of our environment because we live here and aslo love here.

I find it extremely difficult to watch the YOU-TUBE audio when it keeps stopping and doesn’t work properly; I find it hard sometimes to accomplish some things through high tech tools not to mention what it must have been like for people to conquer the peak of the world decades ago! I think this is the reason why Sir Edmund was so admired by the world and his countrymen when he reached the roof of the Earth when technology and gadgets weren’t as convenient to use as they were now. He was a man who strived for his dream and accomplished it, and he was also a man of passion for the better of human race. Through his story I realized how scaling the landscape can mean so much to so many people and can also bring forth love and warmth afterwards to the poor and needy. I think we can all learn something about this respected man, that pressing on to what we believe to be good and true is the realization of marking a beautiful change in the history of mankind.

With destimination, he done lots of things for the people. He was not only a great explorer, he also cared the welfare of the Nepalese people for the rest of his life. Sir Edmund Hillary is the top man of the world!

It’s hard to imagine Sir Edmund Hilary’s position in either New Zealander’s or Nepalese’s heart since there isn’t a relevant close connection in between. Yet, through the films I can tell that both his momentous feat in assaulting on the summit of Mt. Everest and the patronage to Sherpa can be strong evidences that explain why he left such prestige in the nations’ minds. With some better understanding, maybe I will gain a respect as high as the summit.

Fulfilling the dream is the happiest for everyone. Edmund Hillary not merely scaled the highest mountain on earth but also reached the South Pole and the North Pole. Those actions might be a castle in the air for me, which can never be attained. Moreover, he helped Nepalese build schools and hospitals. That is another marvelous feat. The other reason why I admire him is that he found his interest in high school. And then, he carried it out by real action.

A person who is successful does not base on his money or smart but what he has distributed to the world. Just like Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man who has climbed to the summit of Mount Everest, doesn’t be proud of his achievement, instead , he devoted much of his time and money to helping the Sherpa people in Nepal. After he died in 11 January 2008, many people around the world went to New Zealand to mourn him and praise him. So….what is value is not richness but a good mind.

I have known about Edmund Hillary more through the lesson 2 and the information above. Sir Edmund Hillary was definitely an awesome person in the modern world. His great works was not only the first man climibing Mount Everest but devoting himself to welfare. He was the real hero. What a great man! I think people pay respect to him not only because he was the first man to conquer Mount Everest but he helped the Nepalese. There are thousands of climbers who go to Mount Everest every year. But few would help the local people as Edmund Hillary did. And that’s why Edmund Hillary became such a great man.

Edmund Hillary not only climbed Mt. Everest but also conquered people all around the world. The great things were that he helped the Nepalese build schools and hospitals. That’s why the Medias reported the NEWS about his death and all the people mourn in his funeral.
I think a person doesn’t have to do something for being famous. There is always a lot of thing that you can do for this world.

Edmund Hillary, conquered the Mt. Everest, was a man who received the respect from all over the world. After reading his biography, I knew him more. He had a family but an air crash broke it. It was a setback to him. But he still devoted his life to the people in Nepal. A great man will never be defeated by any difficulties and obstacles. That’s the personality I appreciate and want to learn.

I didn’t finish the film, but I already read the Wikipedia.
I think Hillary is really good to always challenge himself.
He is a man that never give up because of the failure. That’s what I really should learn from.
Though he is well-known, he never show proud but humble instead.
Tha’s why everyone around the world love him, and consider him as a humble person.

That Edmund Hillary devoted his life to helping Nepal really amazes me. I think he not only loved his hobby but also loved this soil of Nepal. People were sad about his death but all people remember his dedication to Nepal.

A person who can be memorized eternally is not dependent on how he is rich but what he devotes to a person, a family even a country. Conquering Mount Everest is not his dream but also his country, New Zealand‘s honor. Edmund Hillary’s feat is built on a daring heart and he did not afraid of challenge. I admire him very much and hope that I can turn my dream come true in the future.

Hillary is not only the first man who scaled Mt. Everest but devoted much of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal. He has a challenge, brave and benevolent heart.
After learn this lesson, I am thinking and dreaming maybe one day I could scaled Mt. Everest. The photo we saw at class were so wonderful that I have loved Nepal. I wish I could go there oneday.

I can’t believe that Edmund Hillary was once a beekeeper. This really surprised me because beekeeper is far apart from mountaineer. Edmund Hillary spent all his life going for his interest. Nowadays, it is hard for people to find what they really like, needless to say, going for it. Edmund Hillary was a successful mountaineer, he not only loves the mountain he had climbed, also the place where the mountain located. I really admire him even though I have less interest in mountain climbing. After this lesson and watching those articles, I can now realize why people in New Zealand and Nepal love him so much.

After seeing the picture of Mallory’s body I think he was a real explorer. He knew that climbing Mt. Everest was a very dangerous task but he still tried all his best to do it. However he died there where he love the most.
I am also sorry to hear about Edmund Hillary’s death. He was the first man who conquered the Mount Everest! After climbing the summit, he still came back to Nepal and devoted himself to helping Nepalese. He is not only an explorer but also a kind man. May be I will try to climb Mt. Everest someday!

Edmund Hillary is really a great guy that he never gave up his dream, mountain climbing, although he had to undergo the hardship. With his insistence, he finally reached the summit of Mount Everest with his British expedition. His story teaches me that we should not abandon our dream easily. Besides, we should try our best to put our dream in to our history.

First, I am sorry that I went home without leaving a comment yesterday.
Edmund Hillary was such a great person that is worth us respecting him. He was not only a mountaineer but an enthusiastic person. He helped the Nepalese Children can accept the education. It is very distinct to assist other county.
His deed reminds me again that there are still many people need our help in the whole world. We are the lucky one.

“I don’t know if I particularly want to be remembered for anything. I have enjoyed great satisfaction from my climb of Everest and my trips to the poles. But there’s no doubt, either, that my most worthwhile things have been the building of schools and medical clinics. That has given me more satisfaction than a footprint on a mountain,” Hillary said.
What makes the men become both truly heroic and tough was the way that Hillary lived with the feat and the fame. He’s accomplishment was not just the celebrity he achieved through being the first to reach the top of the very roof of the world but with the way he used his fame to aid the people who had helped him reach Everest: his beloved Sherpa. Hillary has devoted half his life, and limitless energy to them. It is largely thanks to Hillary’s persevering efforts that the Sherpa’s existence has been made better known to the world so that their living has proved a lot. I finally can realized that why A man can be considered to be a ‘living legend’ and the ‘world’s greatest living explorer’.
